* * * *

Turner and his brothers sat on the fence to watch the horses in the late afternoon. Since Turner had been back, the three had met often at the horse pasture after a day’s work to catch up. Turner had just showered, after looking and feeling like he’d wrestled a pig in the mud.

“Feels good, doesn’t it?” Adam said. “A hard day’s work.”

“Speak for yourself.” Turner practically groaned at the ache in his shoulders from carrying and lifting beams

“That outta shape, huh?” Adam teased.

“Shut up. No one’s ever in shape to build half a barn in a day.”

“Admit it,” Cruz said, opening a beer for each of them. “You loved it.”

“Nope. Not using the word love for that.” But Turner smiled. He didn’t know how to say the words yet, but it felt great to be here with his brothers. He’d had no idea how much he missed them.

“So, are you going to make a move or not?” Cruz asked.

“Make a move?” Turner asked.

“He’s talking about Lily, you idiot,” Adam said.

Turner choked on his beer. “Excuse me?” He jumped down from the fence.

“Can’t play stupid with us.” Cruz laughed. “We all noticed your tongue hanging out of your mouth the night Lily showed up for dinner. Plus, Miranda saw you giving her a ride into town the other day. And none of us miss how you seek her out on the north wing.”

“You can’t tell us you don’t think she’s gorgeous. Then we’d have to have your head examined,” Adam said.

“Why haven’t you made a move then, little brother?” Shit! His stomach dropped. Maybe Lily and Adam already had something going.

Adam laughed. “You should see your face, Turner. That look says it all. Lily and I are friends. She’s always been an annoying big sister to me, nothing more.”

“So,” Cruz prodded.

Relieved and happy, Turner grinned at his brothers, completely at ease and enjoying himself. “For some reason, she absolutely hates my guts.”

Cruz barked out a laugh. “You’re not going to let that get in your way, are you?”

“Nope.” Turner finished his beer. “She’s even more beautiful when she’s pissed off at me.”

“Should I ask you what your intentions are?” Adam said. “She’s special, Turner. She’s a complete romantic, a dreamer. She wants it all.”

Adam’s words were heavy, but surprisingly they didn’t scare the crap out of Turner. He looked at his brothers. Good men, both of them. And he was proud to be related to them instead of full of shame for his connection to T.D. So many weights had felt lifted from his chest since he’d been back, since they’d welcomed him back. He hadn’t expected to stay very long, hadn’t expected to want to stay. Every day he felt better, more settled. He slept dreamless, deep sleeps. And Lily? She’d affected him more than any woman, any experience in his life. “Let’s just say I’m very interested and I plan to find out if she feels the same.”

“Speak of the devil.” Adam nodded at the pasture leading to one of the workers’ cottages.
